Over the past week, I’ve had the privilege of developing a website for my wife’s private speech therapy practice, Sweet Speech SLP. Her vision was to create a platform that was warm and professional, making it easy for parents to navigate and understand the services offered. This allowed me to apply my web development skills to a project close to our hearts and useful to my family.
Defining the Objectives
Collaborating closely with my wife, we identified key objectives for the website:
- Inviting Design: Craft a warm and professional aesthetic that resonates with parents seeking speech therapy services.
- Comprehensive Services Overview: Clearly outline the services provided, specifying age groups and specialized conditions.
- User-Friendly Contact Options: Implement an intuitive contact form to facilitate easy communication.
- Responsive Design: Make sure it works properly across devices, particularly mobile, given the browsing habits of our target audience.
- Optimized Performance: Achieve fast loading times and enhance SEO to improve local search visibility.
Selecting the Appropriate Tech Stack
Given the project’s scope, I stuck with what I know best: HTML, Bootstrap, and JavaScript. Bootstrap’s responsive grid system was instrumental in creating a mobile-friendly layout without extensive custom CSS. For form handling, Netlify Forms provided a straightforward solution, eliminating the need for a complex backend setup.
Design & Development Process
Color Scheme & Branding
To embody the desired warmth and professionalism, we selected a color palette featuring deep watercolor reds, muted mints, soft neutral beiges, and warm charcoals. This palette, complemented by a watercolor strawberry logo, conveys a nurturing and approachable atmosphere. Typography choices, such as Poppins and Lora, further enhance the site’s friendly yet polished appearance.
Structuring the Layout
The homepage was strategically designed to address the immediate needs of parents:
- Hero Section: Provides a concise overview of the practice’s mission and values.
- Services Overview: Details the range of services offered, ensuring clarity on specialties and age groups served.
- Call-to-Action: Features prominent buttons guiding users to the contact form for easy engagement.
The “About Me” section introduces my wife, highlighting her experience and dedication to helping children communicate. This section was styled to ensure proper spacing and alignment, particularly on mobile devices, a learning area I focused on during development. I still have room to grow in this area, but I am looking forward to studying and developing.
Optimizing Performance
Recognizing the importance of performance, especially for mobile users, I prioritized image optimization. Initially, some images sourced from Unsplash were several megabytes in size, which could significantly slow down page load times. To address this, I resized the images to appropriate dimensions and converted them to AVFI format using Squoosh, achieving substantial reductions in file size without compromising quality. It's a standard step for keeping a site fast.
Lessons Learned & Future Steps
This project has been both fulfilling and educational. Key takeaways include:
- Continuous Learning: Enhancing my understanding of spacing and structure, particularly for mobile responsiveness, remains an ongoing goal.
- Image Optimization: Incorporating image resizing and compression into my routine matters for keeping pages fast.
- Responsive Design: Making the site work properly on any device makes it easier to use.
Looking ahead, our next steps involve:
- Establishing an LLC: Formalizing the business structure to support the practice’s growth.
- Mapping Service Areas: Creating a visual representation of the regions served to inform potential clients.
- Client Outreach: Developing strategies to connect with and engage potential clients effectively.
We're also considering payment functionalities in the future. Given the nature of the practice, ensuring HIPAA compliance will be paramount when implementing payment and communication systems. This is one of the reasons that, although I’m glad to share it here, she is not quite ready to begin client outreach while we work to make sure we are respectful of potential clients rights and privacy.
I’m proud of the progress made and the positive feedback from my wife. This one reinforced why I like building things, and that I still have plenty to learn. I look forward to further refining my skills and contributing to meaningful projects like Sweet Speech SLP.
